“This oval Troon handstamp (with the lettering G R inside the inner oval standing for George Rex) likely dates from about 1814 when others of this type were issued (e.g. for Leith).  It is known used in 1832 according to Robertson’s Ship Letters.  This handstamp was brought back into use in 1897 by now with a damaged R which appears to be an H (the year the UPU added the regulation requiring the word Paquebot to be put on maritime mail) and is known on two items from the Faroe Islands each dated 1897 as well as two items from Iceland, one dated 1897 and the other 1898.  The boxed Troon ship letter handstamp was sent to Troon on February 4, 1899 by the postal authorities (information again from Robertson’s Ship Letters).”  W.Jonsson
