Mail from Crozet Island dated 15 February – 7 March 1989 was in a bag fell into the sea. The accident was caused by a surge during transfer from “MARION DUFRESNE” onto “ALBATROS” on 28 May. The French Marine patrol boat “ALBATROS” was used for surveillance of the fishing grounds around the French controlled islands in the South Indian Ocean. 600 letters were received at the Paris PLM investigations office on 3 July 1989, and a cachet as illustrated was applied to justify their state. The main six line cachet appears to have been applied in two three line parts, with the date and PARIS P.L.M. ENQUETES both as seperate cachets.
