Portland-Maine 2105 (A) Hosking

“This cover from east coast of U.S.A. has the small and insignificant-looking straight-line paquebot from Portland (Maine), dated May 1913 and listed as type 2105. It was posted on board the “Cymric” of the White Star Line. This is an importand item, in spite of its humble appearance, because Lund, in his excellent book “The Paquebot marks of America” questions is validity, wrongly supposing it to be a photographic reduction of type 2107 (not used until the 1950s). That this theory is incorrect is plainly shown by the illustration. But the mark certainly had a short life, as type 2104 was in use in 1912, and type 2106 by June 1913. This item came into my possession at an auction during one of our own society’s meeting held at Cadby Hall  in the winter of 1970-71, under the auspices of that great man Jim Dawes.”  by R.Hosking (Source: TPO-Journal, Autumn 2006)
