1894 envelope from New South Wales addressed to Dunedin. Franked vertical pair 1d adhesives cancelled “A” in oval bars of Auckland, showing framed ‘PACKET BOAT’ and a very fine strike of the small ‘SAVED FROM WRECK / OF WAIRARAPA” one of only two recorded examples of this small cachet. The S.S. Wairarapa ran in to 700ft cliffs about a mile east of Miners Head on the northern end of Great Barrier Island on 29th October. This cover is illustrated on page 82 of Hoggarth and Gwynn handbook.
